Beginning my list with the likes of Bleakness and Rancœur was a good start, but it was Filature’s debut LP that stood out among the current wave of French bands to look out for. With its captivating post-punk guitar work, melancholic undertones, and politically charged lyrics, Nos États, La Norme arrived via Stonehenge Records in late September 2022. However, it somehow slipped under my navel until early 2023. From the moment I pressed play, this album began to grow on me. It’s that kind of record that sneaks up on you, gradually asserting its place in your daily listening routine. I found myself hooked on Nos États, La Norme in much the same way I was with Litovsk when I first discovered them. It’s just perfect in every way, from its evocative post-punk melodies to its well-crafted lyrics and artwork. In fact, I’d go as far as to say it’s my favorite French album of last year.
